  1. Hi, Menden, 21 Sep 2000
  2. This program decodes and displays Videotext/Teletext from a
  3. /dev/vbi device.
  4. COMPILE & INSTALL:
  5. There's nothing to configure. A simple 'make' is all.
  6. If you do not want png support remove the WITH_PNG in
  7. the Makefile. Additionally, if you want a smaller font
  8. uncomment the "FONT=neep9" line.
  9. It gives you 'alevt', 'alevt-date', and 'alevt-cap' and
  10. their man pages 'alevt.1x', 'alevt-date.1', and 'alevt-cap.1'.
  11. You can install them where ever you want (i.e. /usr/local/bin).
  12. The programs are self-contained and require no other files.
  13. NOTE: Be careful with 'make install'. It's just for me :-)
  14. PROBLEMS:
  15. If you have a lot of decoding errors (lot of these lightning symbols)
  16. you may try pressing the 'f' and 'F' key. This allows fine tuning of
  17. the decoder circuit. There's also a -finetune command line option.
  18. This should only be necessary on really bad signals.
  19. Maybe, I add autotuning later...
  20. UPDATE: added autotuning. It's the default. If you add -debug the
  21. the actions of the pll are printed to stdout.
  22. To get the old (pre finetune) behaviour start it with -finetune 0.
  23. UPDATE: disabled autotuning *g* sometimes it's too jumpy...
  24. ALEVT-DATE:
  25. I added a little tool to set the system time from the videotext
  26. time. The date is not interpreted (not even transmitted on some
  27. channels). So it allows only adjustment of +/-12 hours.
  28. The default allowed adjustment is limited to +/-2 hours (use
  29. -delta to change). Without the -set option it just display
  30. the date in the format of the date command. Look at strftime(3)
  31. for possible control sequences you may use in the -format option.
  32. HACKING:
  33. If you want to play with the font size, you may resize it with
  34. xv (xv font1.xbm). Just make sure, that its width is a multiple of
  35. 32 and its height a multiple of 8. A simple make will create
  36. a version of AleTV with the new font. Warning: a make clean
  37. will erase font1.xbm. The next make will recreate font.xbm from
  38. vtxt.bdf.
  39. AleVT has a built in page editor. If you start it with -editor
  40. you may press 'E' to invoke it. For the usage you have to consult
  41. the sources. (It's very crude!)
  42. TODO: (no specific order)
  43. - Error correction in alevt-cap
  44. - Better language support. Internal 16-bit charset.
  45. - Separated graphics.
  46. - Rewrite the whole stuff. A networked teletext daemon and clients
  47. that connect to it for display, capture, cgi, ...
  48. NEWER VERSIONS:
  49. The primary site of AleVT is http://goron.de/~froese
  50. Have fun,
  51. Edgar Toernig (froese@gmx.de)
